Matt is a drummer, songwriter, and producer from Sun Prairie, WI. He has been studying and performing music for 20 years starting out on violin and piano, and eventually finding his passion in percussion and drum set. In the spring of 2017, he graduated with degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science which he uses to understand music through the lenses of modular thinking and algorithm.
During his time at UW, Matt participated in a number of university ensembles and had the good fortune to study and collaborate with some notable names in the music world including Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, Kurtis Blow, and Richard Davis. After Graduation, Matt was contracted by Suman Entertainment to be the resident drummer on Norwegian Cruise Line’s M.S. Pride of America, a cruise ship based in Hawaii. On the Pride of America, Matt worked with a variety of acts from 70’s rockstars, to broadway singers, to touring boy bands.
Matt teaching philosophy is that technique and theory should be empowering to a student, not restrictive. In addition to being an important part of human culture and art, music is also a tool for learning critical thinking and problem solving and any parameters placed on a student’s learning should be done so in a way that best enhances the student’s creativity and joy.
In addition to teaching, Matt currently enjoys performing, recording, and touring with a number of madison based music projects of differing genres including Pop, Funk, R&B, Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Indie Rock.
“When we practice music, we are improving the most central skills of the human experience: communication, teamwork, improvisation, pattern recognition, organization, mindfulness, focus, and emotional vulnerability. It is no coincidence that the most of the great minds of mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and invention spent their free time learning musical instruments.”
